LUX NOVA derived from the advent of stained glass in 12th century France, means “new light”. The Abbot Suger, who rebuilt the Church of Saint-Denis with Gothic architecture and stained glass windows, used the phrase to describe the heavenly aura that filled the space. His patronage of the new architectural style helped move European architecture beyond Roman imitations and eventually led to masterpieces like Notre Dame and Sainte-Chapelle in Paris and the Koelner Dom in Cologne.
Greg Foley and Donald Hearn’s respective practices involve an engaged approach to composition and abstraction that both artists utilize to highlight color in almost opposing ways. They integrate color with the form and composition it adorns, like the vivid tones of a bird or a colorful amusement park ride. Either without its colors, wouldn’t be nearly as arresting or capable of doing what they succeed in together. Looking at the ride’s unpainted structure or a colorful bird’s feathers without the bird would offer less than half of the complete experience of the considered combinations of composition and color in these series.
About the artist:
Greg Foley (New York, United States) creates mixed media objects, prints, photographs, and drawings. His work reveals the changing nature of color through nuanced abstraction by appropriating the light and color from various sources and representing them in a similar medium – the resulting colorfield abstractions each create a “sense memory” or simulacrum of his experience. In his most recent series, Foley explores geographic locations, printed media, and memorabilia from his personal history. “The places we’ve been and things we collect can form strong associations that morph over time,” Foley says. “I’m revisiting momentos that transport me to different eras, and bringing them forward.” His most recent work features three large scale, abstract, circular photographs of countries that Foley has lived; a series of twenty risographs based on printed media (from children’s books and comics, to fashion magazines and art books); and a set of five embroideries based on select patches that Foley collected from 1975 – 2019.

About the artist:
Donald Hearn (New York, United States) creates mixed media artworks, paintings, and drawings. By referencing architectural modernism bauhaus form-making, Hearn tries to develop images that do not follow logical criteria, but are based only on subjective associations and formal parallels, which incite the viewer to make new personal associations.
His artworks don’t reference immediately recognizable form. The results are constructed to the extent that finite meaning is malleable and possible interpretation becomes multifaceted. By employing abstraction, he creates work through labour-intensive collage processes which can be seen explicitly as a personal space-creation ritual.
