Planthouse is pleased to present 19 Poses, a suite of seven woodblock and chine collé prints by Margaret Garrett.

To celebrate the 100th anniversary of the 19th amendment, the Martha Graham Dance Company chose 19 poses from evocative Graham dances to promote their 2020 season featuring women choreographers. Long inspired by Graham’s work, artist-dancer Margaret Garrett was immediately moved. She set out to learn the poses and use them for a new body of work to honor the centennial which granted women the right to vote.

19 is a project incorporating performance, video, collage, painting and printmaking. The suite of woodblock prints, 19 Poses, is part of the series. After teaching herself the poses, Garrett created a video of herself moving. Next, she set out to make a collage representing each shape. Then, she selected a few of these collages to use as a base for woodblocks. In January, Garrett traveled to Austin, Texas and spent a week working with Katherine Brimberry and Alex Giffen of Flatbed Press, printing and combining the blocks. These prints, especially Trio, Ghostdance and Duo, capture the magic of choreography in relief form. 19 Poses pays tribute to the Graham project and joins them in commemorating the 19th Amendment’s historic milestone.
