Jonathan Weinberg is a painter and art historian based in New Haven, CT. Weinberg is the author of Male Desire: the Homoerotic in American Art and Ambition and Love in Modern American Art, which was praised by art historian Linda Nochlin as “one of the best books on American art of any period that I have ever read.”

Weinberg grew up in New York City. He attended the Fieldston School, studied at Yale University as an undergrad, and received his PhD from Harvard’s Department of Fine Arts in 1990. He currently teaches at the Yale School of Art and the Rhode Island School of Design. Weinberg was a Guggenheim Fellow and an artist-in-residence at St. Michael’s College, the Getty Research Center, and at the Addison Gallery of American Art. A one-man retrospective of his work was on view at the Leslie Lohman Museum in New York City in 2010 and his installation, 49+ (Orlando) was shown at Artspace New Haven in 2016. His paintings are in many important public and private collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Montclair Art Museum. Weinberg is also the lead curator for the touring exhibition, Art after Stonewall: 1969-89 which opened in New York City at the Leslie Lohman Museum and the Grey Art Gallery in April 2019.
