Lanie McNulty
Lanie McNulty is a Manhattan-based photographer and social activist. In her photography and tapestry work, she practices the art of connecting. Eschewing hierarchy in the artist-subject relationship, McNulty has developed a photography process called photo improv in which her subjects become her collaborators and together they create narrative images of her collaborators’ lives. Staged but not scripted, these visual metaphors are vulnerable, sometimes humorous, other times unnerving or raw. Vibrant colors, deliberate detail and both familiar and unexpected gestures pull you in, inviting the viewer into the conversation.
McNulty has had solo exhibitions at the All Things Project (NY), the Gallery @ Common Ground (PA), UpstART Gallery (NY), the Stephen Harris | Rees Roberts Workshop (NY) and the Bronx Presidential Art Gallery, in addition to several group shows. She has degrees from Dartmouth College, Harvard University and Bank Street College of Education. McNulty’s photography series, The Angel in the House, will open at Planthouse later this year.
