Road Signs: A Back Room Affair showcases a selection of letterpress banners of Americana signage by Martin Mazorra. The black and whites prints feature woodcut images and wood type typography. Firmly situated now in a global pandemic, where travel is restricted and monitored, these fabric banners resonate as nostalgic guides to navigating a post-familiar world.
These embellishments echo the stark economy and generic signage that one might find on any highway or roadside, and are chock-full of directives, both pithy and humorous. The text publicizes invented locations and common distractions, peppered with psychological and self-effacing satire, enticing the mind to drift as it does when driving or behind the wheel. Martin Mazorra is the author of the self-titled Language of Flowers print series, founder of Cannonball Press, and longtime advocate of straightforward printmaking and affordable art.
The banners were conceived and realized in the Fall of 2019 during a period of a constant commute between a New York City job and Connecticut studio, where many hours were spent in the car and on the road day and night.
In addition, Planthouse is pleased to present Unmute Yourself | Vote 2020 by Mazorra, a commemorative letterpress print published on the occasion of the exhibition and the 2020 Presidential election. Enjoy the show!
