Rachel Ostrow
(b. 1977) is a Brooklyn-based painter and printmaker. Ostrow’s paintings use movement and light to explore space and form, and skirt the line between abstraction and representation. Although her works are ambiguous, they feel recognizable, familiar, and/or iconic. By hinting at the identifiable yet remaining elusive, the works use abstraction to be suggestive and to engage the viewer’s imagination. Ostrow’s process is physical, improvisational, and playful; she paints with a squeegee, and unearths images by pushing around layers of transparent paint.

Ostrow earned a B.A. in fine arts from Wesleyan University, a post-baccalaureate degree from the Maryland Institute College of Art, and an M.F.A. in painting from Hunter College. She has had solo exhibitions at 42 Social Club (Lyme, CT), Sunday Takeout (Brooklyn, NY), The Kenan Center (Lockport, NY), John Davis Gallery, (Hudson, NY), Saffron (Brooklyn, NY), Todojunto Gallery (Barcelona, Spain), and The Plant (Buffalo, NY). Ostrow has also participated in group exhibitions in Brooklyn, Manhattan, Montreal, Dublin, Joshua Tree, and Great Barrington.
