How You Gonna Get Back To Jersey? | Group Exhibition

July 10 ‒ August 28, 2013

Planthouse is happy to present How You Gonna Get Back To Jersey?, our first annual printmaking exhibition, organized by Brad Ewing

Metonymy is a figure of speech used in rhetoric in which a thing or concept is not called by its own name, but by the name of something intimately associated with that thing or concept.

“How you gonna get back to jersey” sounds like one thing but conveys another, which in this case is a Metonymy. I first overheard this being said when a group of drunken people where staggering towards the PATH train entrance at 1:30 in the morning. How were they going to get back? I laughed—this was a comical question—but a question you ask yourself, inside—not out loud. The feeling of having missed the boat, being lost, even displaced. Home is only a few blocks away, a few trains away, a few miles away, a state away. It can be a distance only in your head.
