Janis Stemmermann, Listening, 2020
Ceramic 3.25” x 13.75” D
FROM JANIS: Listening is a challenging act, to do it well one has to follow a communication thread that can be broken very easily. In this large shallow bowl, I mirrored the word LISTENING in repeat requiring the viewer to make, depending on vantage point, an extra effort to discern, engage and be present.
JANIS STEMMERMAN is a sculptor, collaborative printmaker, and textile designer.
Born in Neptune, NJ 1963 and raised in New Hampshire. Received a BFA in sculpture from the Maryland Institute College of Art in 1986. Attended the Alliance of Independent Colleges of Art New York Studio Program in 1985. Awarded artist residency fellowships from the Vermont Studio Center, the Tyrone Guthrie Center in Ireland and is a recipient of Pollack Krasner artist grant.
