Keith Thomson | Alabamanhattan
September 12 – October 19, 2024
Planthouse presents Alabamanhattan by Keith Thomson, an exhibition featuring twenty-six new mixed-media paintings. The works draw inspiration from Alabama, where Thomson is based, to New York City, where he previously lived. They are droll, whimsical tableaus brimming with social commentary that speak to his former job as a political cartoonist at New York Newsday. He creates as a means of escapism from the monotony of everyday life both for himself and the viewer. Alabamanhattan is Thomson's first solo exhibition at Planthouse. The exhibition is on view from September 12 – October 19, 2024.
Keith Thomson studied drawing at Columbia University and the Sorbonne and then worked as a political cartoonist—for The New Haven Register and New York Newsday—until ninjas kidnapped his children and demanded a ransom of ten oil paintings. In the course of meeting their demands, he discovered that he loved painting. (Note: this bio may have been embellished in the interest of not being boring.)
